  • From Last to First

She finished last. Dead last. It wasn’t really close either. She finished 76 seconds behind the second-to-last competitor and over 5000 meters that is a significant distance. It’s more significant when it’s at the Foot Locker National Championships, where distances are covered faster than ever as the country’s best harriers all convene for one race each year to decide a champion. It wasn’t supposed to end this way for Emma Brink, though it never is for any qualifier at Foot Locker, yet in crossing that finish line with the slowest time on the day, Brink may have left an equally important mark on the race for many of her fans and peers.

  • MileSplit XC Super 50 Individuals (Final release)

Lukas Verzbicas, IL, has clearly established himself as the best high school XC harrier of 2010 with an impressive Nike XC Nationals win in the mud and a dominating win in the sun at the Foot Locker Nationals.  Lukas became the first harrier to win both the NXN and Foot Locker titles in the same year and just the 3rd harrier ever to win 2 Foot Locker titles.  These stats should establish a foundation for considering him as one of the best high school harriers of all-time.

  • MileSplit XC Journal: Aisling Cuffe #8

Hello everyone!  I am writing this on my last night at home, before I catch my early flight to sunny San Diego, en route to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships!  I am very excited for my trip.  This is the time of year that I look forward to the most (ever since I started running, anyway).  This is by far my favorite race of the year.  I can’t wait to meet all of the competitors, and get to know them more throughout the course of the weekend.  I can already picture what I will be doing tomorrow!  I will get off the plane, and pause to take in the warm sunshine that I haven’t seen in about 2 months.  I will ride the Foot Locker bus to the Del Coronado, and check in to get all of the gear and Uniforms and what not… I can’t wait to see the uniforms!  I have a feeling I know what color they will be, but I can’t be 100% sure until I actually get to hold them in my hands.  After that, I will meet my roommate, and we will get ready for the group run in the afternoon.  I realize that I am just rambling on and on about something that hasn’t even happened yet, but I really can’t wait.  It’s going to be hard go to bed tonight!

  • Athlete Spotlight: Kayla Beattie (Woodstock IL)

The Illinois State cross country champion and Detweiler Park course record setter (16:22 3 mile state meet performance) Kayla Beattie from Woodstock High School will be racing Saturday in her first Foot Locker Nationals appearance. The only girls' qualifier from the state of Illinois, Beattie is making her second consecutive trip to the West Coast in as many weeks following a 12th place finish at the Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon last Saturday as she came into the race as the NXN Midwest Regional champion. Beattie, an All-American in the two mile at the Nike Indoor Nationals last March, will be in contention for a top 15 All-American finish in San Diego and looking to finish strong with her Midwest Region teammates after a 6th place finish at the regional qualifier in Wisconsin.

  • Athlete Spotlight: Jack Driggs (York IL)

Jack Driggs just competed in his third Nike Cross Nationals as he led the York (IL) team to another NXN berth with an 18th place individual finish in the race at Portland. After hoping for a top 10 finish in Portland, Driggs will get an opportunity to redeem himself this weekend as one of the 40 finalists for the 2010 Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego. It will be his first time racing at Foot Locker Nationals, but Driggs has plenty of national caliber meet racing experience from his three previous appearances at NXN with his York teammates under the legendary coach Joe Newton. Driggs was ranked #17 in the MileSplit US rankings prior to NXN and is one of the nation's top returning milers after winning the Midwest Distance Gala mile last June with a 4:08 performance. MileSplit US interviewed the Illinois state cross country runner-up Driggs heading into his trip to compete at Balboa Park for the Foot Locker Nationals.

  • Nike Cross Nationals Preview

The 7th annual Nike Cross Nationals will be held on Saturday, December 4th, at Portland Meadows on the north side of the city of Portland, Oregon. The meet has served as the unofficial yet virtually legitimate national high school cross country team championships since NXN's inception in 2004. A total of 22 of the nation's best cross country teams representing nine regions across the country will be racing alongside each other on the three loop course inside the horsetrack within the infield area of Portland Meadows.  The 5K course layout has traditionally been muddy and slick footing as a result of the area's regular rainfall. The Nike experience is an unforgettable few days for the athletes and coaches starting with the all-expense paid trip to Oregon as well as plenty of free gear and other perks showered upon them as they arrive on the Nike Campus.

  • Nike Cross Nationals - Girls Preview

Photo by Ron Crocker    Fayetteville-Manlius girls have been in a league of their own against the best of the best for four years running now as the defending Nike Cross Nationals team champions. The New York squad saw a group of seniors graduate last spring which were members of four straight national champion squads and will have another senior group which is in line to enjoy the same feat as the unanimous US #1 team in several national team rankings. If there were ever a year for the California girls to knock off the New York girls from having bragging rights in cross country, this year would be a great opportunity with their four team representatives. An exceptionally strong season of performances by the California girls earned them two at-large berth squads in Great Oak and La Costa Canyon to join the two automatic qualifiers Saugus and Mira Costa after the state meet results merge.

  • Nike Cross Nationals - Boys Preview

Photo by Ron Crocker   While the girls' race focus stays on the original purpose of the Nike Cross Nationals in crowning the national team championship and if the Fayetteville-Manlius girls can extend their streak to five titles, it is the individual stars which takes the spotlight for the boys' race at the 2010 Nike Cross Nationals. Defending Foot Locker Nationals champion Lukas Verzbicas of Sandburg High School in Illinois will be attempting to put stamp himself as one of the all-time greats in the history of United States high school cross country by trying to win both national titles at the Nike Cross Nationals and Foot Locker Nationals in consecutive weekends. His biggest test arguably will not be in doubling back on likely tired legs in San Diego next Saturday at Foot Locker Nationals, but his first stop in the double at Portland Meadows in his first ever Nike Cross Nationals race.
