Thomas Fitzgerald from Fairburn, GA and Langston Hughes HS set a new adidas Track Nationals 400m Hurdle Meet Record and current US#6 mark of 52.19. He would compete at adidas Track Nationals under D4 Fire Training Group.
Fitzgerald held a personal best of 53.55 over 400m Hurdles and had run 36.63 over 300m Hurdles where he won the GHSA 5A State Championship. He was in the fifth heat of the five section final, and after seeing heat four won in 52.80 by Deandre Thomas (MD), it would take a big personal best for Fitzgerald to take the adidas Track Nationals title. D4 teammate Jamari Rousseau would run well in heat four as well dropping his personal best from 54.10 to 52.99.
Running in Lane 3, Fitzgerald would get out strong immediately making up the stagger on Lane 4. He would make up ground on the athletes in lanes 6, 7 and 8 down the backstretch and surpass them on the final turn. He'd be the first athlete onto the homestretch with just needing two clean final hurdles and to race the clock to get under Thomas' 52.80.
Fitzgerald would have a strong final homestretch putting even more distance on the field and crossed the line in 52.19. His mark is good for a current US#6 and breaks fellow Georgian Leterance Fleming's meet record of 52.21 from 2025.
