Five days removed from the Utah State Championships -- which took place on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City -- we've come away with some realizations.

  • Daniel Simmons is a soul-crusher out there on the cross country course: The American Fork star not only won the Class 6A in 14:49.80, which was the fastest time over the distance on the day, but he also set the tone for what would be a monumental team win, too. American Fork found a way to dispatch top-rated Herriman, which ultimately fell to fourth on the day.
  • Which goes to show: Anything can happen at the state championships in Utah. American Fork finished first in Class 6A race with 76 points and was followed by Lone Peak (99 points), Riverton (101) and then Herriman (126).
  • Perhaps another surprise came in the Class 6A girls race, with Lone Peak junior Andie Aagard winning the individual title in 17:26.60 and running past Avalon Mecham of American Fork, who finished in 17:47.60. Perhaps that was a sign. Lone Peak's team performance followed suit, helping the squad win the Class 6A title with 30 points, a full 27 removed from American Fork's 57.
  • Timpview Class 5A star Jane Hedengren won the overall title in 17:25.40.
  • Tayson Echohawk continued to prove why he's an absolute stud: The Orem star ran the second-fastest 5K of the day at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City with a time of 14:53.70. That was his fifth win of the season and his third straight. Mountain View's Liam Heninger, however, would walk away happy, too. While the senior finished second to Echohawk in 15:05.20, Mountain View took the team title with 48 points on a 15:31 average.
  • Carbon freshman Rozlyn Stowe won the Class 3A race in 18:17.10.
