There were just two races for all the marbles in Indiana this weekend.

And on Saturday, some madness almost came to blows, with MileSplit50 No. 3 ranked Carmel being taken to their very limits by No. 18 Zionsville.

But in the end it was the Greyhounds who outlasted their pesky friends, securing another state title with a scoreline of 103-106.

While Carmel senior star Kole Mathison pocketed his seventh straight win, what ultimately was the most important win of his season was a milestone, too: It was his first cross country state title; he powering past the finish line in 15:02.80, a full nine seconds ahead of his teammate Anthony Provenzano, who needed a lean to secure the runner-up nod over Cameron Todd of Brebeuf Jesuit.

It turned out, Carmel needed every single placement.

The Indiana power went 1-2-28-56-61, while Zionsville scored every single runner into the finish line before Carmel's final two runners. Zionsville authored performances of 15-26-34-35-37.

Center Grove finished third overall with 143 points while Columbus North was fourth with 157 and Noblesville was fifth with 166.

The girls race was little surprise.

Oregon recruit Lily Cridge, dominant from her first race in August, took the tape first, roughly three seconds ahead of runner-up finisher Nicki Southerland.

The Bishop Chatard star clocked a time of 17:14.60, earning her second straight state title and her eighth straight win. Across 2022, in fact, it could be argued that Cridge has been the most dominant star in high school cross country, with three performances under 17 minutes for 5K.

Southerland, a high school junior, was second in 17:17.50, while Park Tudor senior Sophia Kennedy was third in 17:24.40.

Noblesville's girls, an honorable mention MileSplit50 ranked team, made its biggest statement of the season with the win, scoring 122 points behind a 19:10 average.

Columbus North was second with 153 points while Carmel was third in 177.
