6. Senior Moment: Thelma Davies Says 'Not So Fast' To Super Fresh Moforehan Abinusawa

- - -

Thelma Davies surely had to notice.

While the Girard College (PA) senior and Louisiana State University signee had quietly put together a very good indoor season in 2019, another sprinter from her own state was starting to gain some major traction in the 55m and 60m.

And she was a freshman, too.

Deservedly so, Germantown Academy (PA) first year athlete Moforehan Abinusawa had been dazzling in the short sprints, pocketing a US No. 1 55m time of 6.82 seconds at the Millrose Games and four other performances under 7 seconds.

But the duo had never faced ...before Sunday.

So when the PTFCA Indoor State Championships arrived at Penn State University, Davies was on high alert.

And in a spectacular final that drew the best out of both athletes, it came down to the final steps.

Abinusawa exploded out of the blocks for an early lead, though it was Davies who's acceleration and finish in the final meters netted a spectacular win.

Davies pounced for a US No. 2 time and state record of 7.31 seconds in the 60m, while Abinusawa was third in 7.32.

For good measure, Davies returned in the 200m against the Germantown Academy freshman and did it again: She earned her second state title, another state record and a career best time of 23.51 seconds.
