5. Theo's Never-Say-Quit Race, And His Statement Making Win Over Sam Affolder

- - -

It wasn't the fastest time of his career, and it probably wasn't even his best race.

But there was no questioning the will of EC Glass (VA) senior Theo Woods in the final 100 meters of the boys Class 4A 1K on Saturday at the VHSL Class 4A Indoor State Championships.

Facing a massive deficit from Loudoun Valley's (VA) Sam Affolder, who built an early and impressive lead through 800 meters, Woods didn't relent on the backstretch, the final turn or on the homestretch, and he powered through the line to beat his competition in 2:28.11.

The future Georgetown University athlete claimed his second straight title at the distance and bested his former Class 4A record of 2:30 by two seconds, issuing one of the signature moments of Virginia's championships over the weekend.
