3. Marlee, Matt And Kayla: Three Unforgettable Races At The USATF Senior Indoor Champs

- - -

Kind of crazy to think that three all-time efforts in high school history were footnotes at the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships ...but that's just the kind of weekend it was.

  1. We could start first with Saint Anthony's (NY) senior Matthew Payamps, who dropped the No. 2 all-time high school effort at 1K in the first round of the men's race, finishing in 2:23.46. Payamps' season has been remarkable
  2. There was also Northern (PA) junior Marlee Starliper, who became just the seventh girl all-time to go under 10 minutes for 2-miles, finishing in 9:58.22. She's No. 6 all-time at the distance indoors, and just three seconds away with Melody Fairchild's No. 2 mark of 9:55.92.
  3. And then there was Run U Xpress' Kayla Davis, who ran an opening round time of 37.74 in the 300m, then came back to finish third overall in the final in 37.46, which is a No. 5 all-time effort and a freshman class record. She's the third fastest female at the distance all-time.

  • Payamps: "Coming into it, I knew I wanted to get after it and really run to the best of my ability. That's what it's for, to compete. I'm happy." INTERVIEW
  • Starliper: "It was amazing. I really didn't know what to expect coming into this race. All I knew was that I wanted to break 10 minutes." INTERVIEW
  • Davis: "It's very eventful, it's exciting. You get an adrenaline rush, knowing your the youngest running against people who are older than you and have been running longer than you. But it was fun overall." INTERVIEW
