Sanchez Takes Over On Hills, Conde de Frankenberg Notches Latest Win At Lovejoy

Kevin Sanchez hit another gear on the hills at Lovejoy.
In his first 5K of the season -- following his win at 4K at the Friday Night Lights meet at The Woodlands -- the defending UIL Class 6A champion surged past Denton's Wyatt Athey over that critical juncture at the Lucas Lovejoy Fall Festival in McKinney, Texas, pressing on until he crossed the finish in a winning time of 14:55.35.
How good was the win? Sanchez, listed No. 17 on the most-recent MileSplit50 national rankings, earned just the third sub-15 performance of his career and a new Texas No. 3 time.
Athey was second in 15:10.39 while Wolfe City's Caden Thurman was third in15:23.94. Better yet, Sanchez's Vandegrift squad, potentially a threat to challenge for a Class 6A title this fall, pocketed the team win with a 15:53 average and a dominant effort of 75 points.

Isabel Conde de Frankenberg, meanwhile, captured her fourth straight win of the season, clocking a winning time of 17:12.12 as she moved past Sara Morefield, Shewaye Johnson, Amy Morefield and Abi Bass, four runners who are spread across all levels of Texas -- Class 6A, Class 5A and Class 4A.
The Morefield sisters, however, are the athletes most likely to see Frankenberg down the line, as both lead Lucas Lovejoy, which interestingly enough won the team battle with a rather emphatic display of 48 points.
Sara Morefield, just a junior, was second to Frankenberg in 17:39 while Johnson was third in 17:41. Sara's sister, Amy, was fourth in 17:52 while Bass, a Class 4A runner, was fifth in 17:54.00.
