1. The Historic, Unbelievable, Edge-Of-Your-Seat, Instant Classic 600 Meter Final Of Athing Mu

- - -

It's simply mind-boggling to think that Athing Mu, at 16 years old, is the fastest women (and girl) in the world at 600 meters indoors.

But it's true!

The Trenton Central junior faced a stiff challenge at the USATF Indoor Championships this weekend in New York.

Try to hang with the best women in the country through three laps.

And she certainly answered the call, first setting a national record on Saturday in 1:26.23 before coming back to the final on Sunday and swallowing up the field in a monster 1:23.57 effort that claimed a new World Lead, a new American Record, a New World Junior and U18 Youth Record, and another high school national record.

By the end of her two performances, it was the other way around: The women in the field were the ones trying to hang.

"I'm super shocked," Mu said afterward. "At first when I was taking a picture next to the timing, I thought it was just another high school record. And then I looked back and it said, 'AR.' And I also didn't see the timem, 1:23. I said, 'Oh my God, that's crazy.' It literally brought me to tears."

For much of the indoor season, Mu had shown flashes of greatness, a dominating performance here, a wonderful win there.

The redeeming theme in all of Mu's races was her desire to win, and her competitiveness.

And on Sunday, that once again showed itself on the backstretch, with Nike's Raevyn Rogers swinging wide for the pass on Mu.

The high school star--who faced Rogers in an 800m race at the beginning of the month--never budged, answering the move and then flourishing on the straightaway to take the win, the record, the pride and the prestige.

Next up? Perhaps anything.
