6. Jayla Kirkland (AL) - 100 & 200m Champ
For the second year in a row, an underclassmen sprinter from the Southeast won the New Balance Nationals Outdoor titles in both the girls 100 and 200 meter dash. Last year, it was Candace Hill as a freshmen from Georgia pulling off the double. This year, it was sophomore Jayla Kirkland able to run away with national championships in both the 100 and 200.
A tenth grader from Woodlawn High School in Alabama, Kirkland knocked two tenths of a second off her 100 meter PR with a wind-aided, but fast 11.34 clocking in the 100 meter finals. She had a tailwind to help her time in the 100, which made her victory and clocking in the 200 meter finals all the more impressive into a -2.0 headwind with a season best time of 23.71 against two experienced competitors in Cassondra Hall from Georgia and Diamond Spaulding from Florida.
