Kaitlyn Estep Runs New 800m Meet Record At RunningLane

Sophomore Kaitlyn Estep of Cardinal Gibbons (NC) ran 2:06.10 at New Balance Indoor Nationals in March, and has been hungry for a fast 800m time since.  After winning the NCHSAA 7A 800m State Championship last weekend in 2:07.83 after a 4:42.47 finish in the 1600m she was ready to let it rip at the RunningLane Track Championship Friday night. 

Despite windy and rainy conditions earlier in the day weather cooperated during the end of Friday's action.  Estep would go to the front and lead the race wire to wire going through 400m in 1:01.51 with pace lights set at 2:04.00 pace.  She'd have a slight gap on the field, but had fellow North Carolinian Caitlin Kasten (Marvin Ridge) moving up just a few steps behind.  Kasten took 2nd to Estep last Friday at the NCHSAA 7A State Championship 800m.

Estep would make a push down the backstretch and extend her lead on Kasten with the pacelights just ahead of her.  She'd finish just behind them in 2:04.96 to take the individual win with Kasten taking 2nd in 2:07.15 setting a new personal best as well.

Estep's mark will break Nicki Southerland's (Delta, IN) RunningLane Track Championship Meet Record of 2:05.14 and a new North Carolina State Record breaking Lauren Tolbert's (Highland Tech) 2:06.00 from Brooks PR in 2022.
