Out west in California at the Arcadia Invitational, Timpview's (Utah) Jane Hedengren and Mercer Island's (Wash.) Owen Powell set the standard in the 2-mile and 3200m, posting a pair of national leads en route to history.

At the Arcadia Invitational, Hedengren practically time trialed a national record in the 2-mile, smashing Allie Zealand's (Pacers Homeschool) former record of 9:41.76. After establishing a nine-second lead by the 800m mark, Hedengren continually pulled away, eventually coming through the mile mark in 4:46.47, following that up with a 4:47.65 mile, practically even-splitting her dominant run. As the BYU signee crossed the finish line, the clock read 9:34.12, a new national record. Hedengren also broke both the 3k (8:57) and 3200m (9:30) records, increasing her total to nine, which have all been set throughout her senior campaign.

Still coming down from an indoor campaign that saw him run 3:56 and 8:04 in the mile and 3k, Powell wasted no time in his third race of the outdoor season. In one of the most competitive fields, Arcadia has put together in recent memory, Powell pulled away from the front pack just after the bell. Powell broke the tape in 8:39.86, less than a second ahead of the rest of the field. Powell led 28 other boys under 9:00, and is the first Washingtonian to dip below 8:40. Powell also sits No. 18 in U.S. prep history, and is one of just 19 high schoolers ever to break 8:40.
