Carter Smith, Mifflin County (PA)
Class of 2026
--
To no ones surprise, Carter Smith of Mifflin County, PA went out with a bang in his final PIAA State Championships at Shippensburg University last weekend. On Friday he'd run a 4:02.63 1600m to win the AAA title, then on Saturday he'd anchor Mifflin County to a AAA 4x800m State Title moving from 7th to 1st on the anchor leg with an 1:47.85 FAT split.
In the 1600m Smith was not messing around from the gun going out in 58.07 seconds looking like he was going to make a push to break Drew Griffith's historic PIAA 1600m State Meet Record of 3:57.08 run in 2024, which is also the NFHS 1600m National Record. Smith would come through 800m in 1:59.83 seven seconds ahead of the field followed by 1:02.80 and 1:00.10 laps to come through in 4:02.63 winning by just under seven seconds ahead of Jonathan Stetchock (Hempfield Area) who would close in 58.81 in a tight battle for second.
In the 4x800m, Mifflin County would sit in third after the first exchange with a 1:58.56 split, but move up to the lead a second ahead of the field on the second leg in 1:54.65 from junior Wyatt Kauffman. They'd have a slight lead on the field but had many teams within striking distance. Lower Merion would move from sixth to first over the third leg with Mifflin County four seconds back with the stick in Smith's hands sitting in 7th. He'd have a gap back to the teams in third through sixth place that were a little behind Lower Merion and Haverford Township out front. As the first lap would play out Smith would catch the group in front of him who all closed the gap on the leaders with Smith and Mifflin sitting in fourth at the bell. He'd look smooth coming off the turn, then change gears powering to the lead down the backstretch. He'd continue that push through the line as Mifflin County would run a 7:42.46 behind his 1:47.85 anchor leg. Haverford Township would take second in 7:44.31 ahead of Council Rock North who'd take third in 7:44.77.

Mia Sirois after her IHSA State Championship 3200m and 1600m
Mia Sirois, Barrington (IL)
Class of 2027
---
Mia Sirois missed the 2025 cross country season due to injury, but is proven to be back and better than ever after an impressive showing at last weeks IHSA 3A Girls State Championships. On Friday she'd just have the 1600m prelims where she'd win her section in 4:49.68 to qualify for the finals on Saturday.
First on Saturday would be the 3200m where she'd have to face off with Kara Glenn (St. Charles North) who was her biggest competition in the 1600m finals with a 4:46.80 seasons best. Glenn would fall into heat 1 with Sirois in heat 2 off qualifying times, but Glenn would solo a 10:11.59 to set the standard for Sirois and the rest of her heat 2 competition. Sirois was not messing around from the gun going out in 1:11.13 then holding 1:13 pace through the 1600m coming through in 4:52.10 far ahead of the field. She'd run relatively even throughout with two 1:14.0 splits for laps 5 and 6 before closing in 1:12.41 and 1:11.59 for an even split 9:44.16. Her mark is a new US#2 this season behind Averi Lowen's (Bowdon, GA) 9:41.95. The two will match up in the 2 Mile in two weeks at Brooks PR. Sirous' mark was a new IHSA All-Class State Meet Record breaking Tatum David's (Olney) 9:53.96 set in 2023.
Sirois would get to battle head to head with Glenn in the 3A 1600m Finals later in the day. Sirois would control the pace through 800m in 2:23.64 with Lennox Szymonik and Glenn right on her heels. Glenn would move to the lead on the third lap, then hammer a 1:06.76 final 400m to run a 5 second personal best of 4:41.28 just off Ali Ince's Meet Record of 4:40.85 set in 2021. Sirous would set a new personal best of 4:46.30 to take second overall.
