No. 24: Wayzata (MN)
- - -
Analysis: Season-to-season, Wayzata can always rely on its depth. As one of Minnesota's top enduring cross country programs, you can always expect a team with numbers in Class 3A. A year ago, this team won the state title over Minneapolis Southwest by 22 points. In no short order, that was achieved by youth -- four of its seven were non-seniors.
Led by Hamza Mohamed, who finished 26th, the team had an incredible 17-second spread over a 16:23 average. That was the good. A few weeks alter, Wayzata finished dead last at the Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championships.
But as anyone will tell you, bad results can strengthen you in ways wins can't. This team returns five runners under 16 minutes, with Mohamed and Parker Dietrick owning personal best times under 15:35. As always, the depth is there. Just what can Wayzata do with it in 2022?
Biggest Question: Can Wayzata turn depth into star power?
Nothing solves scoring issues more than a star runner. While Wayzata will be served running as a pack, if Mohamed or Dietrick break through into that next stratosphere, this team will be feared.
