Niwot Doubles At Desert Twilight
The Niwot girls did not waste a second on Friday night.
The Cougars picked up a decisive, mid-season invitational win against some of the country's best programs, beating MileSplit50 No. 3 Arapahoe and No. 15 Desert Vista en route to a 44-point victory.
They did it up front, with sophomore Mia Prok scoring a third-place finish in 17:06.40, and then the Cougars hit it right down the middle, finishing sixth, eighth, 13th and 21st -- in fact, another girl in the open race even won her heat in 17:43.00. Two girls were over 140, three more were over 130 and its sixth and seventh were over 120.
All together, it was a statement-making win for the No. 16 program.
Up front, Desert Vista's Lauren Ping landed the overall win with a time of 16:40.40 -- a new career best for 5K and another big speed rating of 152, her second over 150.
Air Academy's Bethany Michalak was the other female under 17 minutes, finishing in 16:54.8.
Not to be outdone, though, the Niwot boys also claimed a rather dominating display, dispatching El Paso Eastwood (143) and Desert Vista (157) with 61 points and a 15:24 average.
Seniors Zane Bergen -- the overall winner at 14:50.1 -- and Joey Hendershot were both over 180, while the next three scorers went like this: 179, 169 and 167.
