Top 5 Moments At USATF Junior Nationals, Day 2

1. Harrison Williams Surpasses 8,000 Points To Win Decathlon

Stanford freshman Harrison Williams became a legit decathlete on Friday. Not that the National High School Record or NCAA All-American honors are anything to scoff at.

But, according to the now two-time USATF Junior National champion, you can't consider yourself good until you break the 8,000 point total. He just edged that milestone, scoring a total of 8,001 points through ten events over two hot days in Eugene, Ore.

"It's very satisfying just to break 8,000," he said. "It's kind of the barrier for all decathletes. Once you get over 8,000, then you consider yourself good. I get a little unsatisfied because I didn't get the record but I'm happy to be over 8,000."

The record mentioned is the American Junior record, set by Gunnar Nixon of Arkansas in 2012. With the new personal best, Williams is just 17 points off the record of 8,018 points.

"Unfortunately, it was just too hot," he said. "I was too tired, couldn't quite make it in the 1500m. I definitely have a chance to get it next time."

He threw an all-time best in the Discus (133-3) and ran a wind-legal personal best in the 110m hurdles (14.06). Day 2 also included an outdoor best clearance of 16-6.75 in the pole vault, despite a sweaty grip from the hot day.

"I couldn't get a good grip on the pole so ended up not making any good attempts [at 16-10]," he said.

He aggravated a nagging ankle injury during the high jump competition on Day 1. He said the injury made him a little more cautious than usual during some events, including the 400m. He ran just 48.56 in that event, when his best is 47.99.

Williams, who recently placed fourth at the NCAA Championship, said there is no particular event that will take him to surpass 8,018, but - "really, it's just a solid 10 events."

Last year, he found himself in a similar position as he won the USATF Junior Nationals just off the high school national record but surpassed it at the IAAF World Junior Championships (7,760).

"This year, definitely, I feel a lot better about where I am heading into Pan-Ams. Last year, I did the same kind of thing, almost getting the record at the trials," he said. "If everything goes the same this year, I should get the record at the next meet."
