3. Crazy 800 Prelims: Unattached Holdsworth Edges Brazier For Finals Spot

In a dramatic prelim, Antonio Humphrey edged Derek Holdsworth and Donovan Brazier for the Heat 3 win. Brazier was later disqualified for cutting in too early and Holdsworth, who opted to train independently this year in lieu of joining a college program, took the final spot in the final.

In Heat 1, U.S. No 6 ranked prep Shane Streich of Minnesota kicked past Robert Ford of USC in what would be the two fastest times of the day, 1:51.21 to 1:51.24.

Heat 2 saw Memphis, TN senior Carlton Orange blew by Ishmael Muhammed of Villanova with a strong final 50 meters, 1:51.44 to 1:51.94. A major casualty in this race was Myles Marshall, who finished fourth in 1:53.23. The Harvard recruit was the World Youth Olympics champion and a 1:48 performer last summer.

But the real story was in Heat 3.This prelim was the most highly anticipated of the day, as it featured U.S. No. 4 All-Time performer Donavan Brazier, who ran 1:47.55 to win Brooks PR last weekend and makes it a habit to run fast.

Runners needed 1:51.71 to advance on time.

Brazier ran his typical style - straight to the front. The Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills, Mich. senior split 27.13 through the first 200m with Antonio Humphrey of Kansas and Derek Holdsworth running 2-3. Positions held even through 400m, with Brazier crossing the line in 57.32.

Brazier led the pack of three through 600m in 1:25, as Holdsworth swung wide onto the outside. It looked like those two would race to a photo finish, but somehow Humphrey - running in third for the entirety of this race - somehow snuck in between the two of them to edge them for the win in 1:52.51. Brazier finished second.

Immediately after the race, it looked as though Holdsworth had been just edged for a qualifying spot, as the 1:52 times were the slowest of the three heats.

But as final results loaded, Brazier was listed as 'DQ' for cutting in too early.

Holdsworth, who graduated from Lafayette High School in Virginia last year and now trains independently, would have another shot.

The 2014 Brooks PR champion is training while working and taking classes part-time. He says he chose not to enroll in a traditional NCAA program because he wanted to take college courses at his own pace and not be tied to a certain number of credit hours per semester.

The finals could be redemption for the 2014 graduate after finishing a close third at this meet last year.
