Top 5 Moments At USATF Junior Nationals, Day 2

Teahna Daniels

4. Teahna Daniels Closes Senior Year On Her Terms - With National Title

Teahna Daniels ran a wind-legal personal best of 11.24 for 100m to beat out several collegiate All-Americans for her first USATF Junior National title.

The time put a smile back on the sprinter's face, who has worked through injury issues in her senior campaign at First Academy, Florida.

"I just feel I'm back," she said. "I know I had a little tweak in my hamstring and that kind of messed my head up a little bit. I had a little virus the day before and wasn't feeling too good but now I'm right."

She tweaked her hamstring when she cruised a wind-aided 11.15 (+2.4) at the beginning of the season in the Pure Athletics Elite Meet versus a field of professionals.

The University of Texas recruit still easily defended her Florida state title but did not enter another major competition until the adidas Grand Prix, where she placed runner-up to Candace Hill, 11.21 to 11.50.

After that race, Daniels said she felt a little off her game. Though Hill is certainly no slouch - the Rockdale Co., Ga. sophomore went on to break the National High School Record with an astounding 10.98 one week later at Brooks PR.

"I was speechless," she said of the 10.98. "I commend her, I salute Candace."

Daniels sat out both the Brooks PR Invitational and New Balance Nationals Outdoor last weekend, though she was the NBN Indoors champion for the 60m dash. She wanted to focus on snagging a title in Eugene.

Of all the national championship events offered to high school athletes, which is the most meaningful? Daniels' win is perhaps a notch above the rest, as it comes over NCAA fourth and fifth-place finishers Aleia Hobbs of LSU and Ky Westbrook of USC.
