What is the most memorable Penn Relays high school performance of all time?

Alan Webb & South Lakes (VA)

The American Record Holder in the Mile at both the prep and senior levels, Alan Webb, was also a star of The Penn Relays Carnival in his high school heyday. The South Lakes (VA) runner was a two-time recipient of the High School Boys' Most Outstanding Athlete for Relays award in 2000 and 2001.

In 2000, the high school junior ran what is still the Relays' fastest-ever 1,600m split of 3:59.9 on the anchor leg of the Distance Medley Relay. It was not quite enough as South Lakes narrowly lost the Championship of America to St. Malachy's of Ireland, 10:02.32 to 10:00.70.

The crew came back in 2001 to much fanfare as Kanda Karmo (2:00.8), Yonathan Kebede (1:59.2), Richard Smith (1:52.7) and Webb (1:49.1) won the COA 4x800m on Friday night and the COA DMR on Saturday.

The Reston, Va. squad set what is still the Penn Relays Meet Record of 9:59.66, thanks to splits from Smith (3:07.2), Justin Smyser (50.4), Karmo (1:57.4) and Webb (4:04.7). They would go on to set the National High School Record of 9:49.78 later that year.
