The Weekend Rundown: The Best Action From Around The Country

Nike South Boys Highlights

Flower Mound (Texas) High junior Alex Maier rose to the occasion on Saturday at the Nike South Invitational at The Woodlands, earning a win in the boys championship race in a time of 15:18.80.

This came, however, after he was forced to change plans after the cancellation of the McNeil Invitational due to poor conditions in Round Rock, and was granted access into Nike South, where he went toe-to-toe with top competition on a slightly more difficult course.

This time last year, Maier produced his first effort under 15 minutes at McNeil (14:43.27) and was likely looking to accomplish that feat again.

But the win at Nike South was no less worthwhile, as he crossed the finish roughly 14 seconds ahead of his teammate, sophomore Kirk Jarrett, and third-place Gavin Hoffpauir from The Woodlands.

The Woodlands' boys team, however, earned another team championship -- they achieved this feat last year, too -- producing 38 points and a solid 15:54 average between their first five runners.

Nike South Girls Highlights

In the girls race, McKinney North star London Culbreath took the win in 17:29.20 for a comfortable victory.

The team competition was certainly down to the wire, though, as Flower Mound's girls compiled 81 points to earn a tight victory over Marcus (87) for an impressive victory -- one that will certainly make an impact later in the season.

Flower Mound's girls compiled an 85-second spread and an average of 19:03, scoring three runners in the top 15 and their fourth and fifth in the top 30.
