Mya Hill of Elmwood ran 5:00.93 in the 1600m, moving up to #27 in IL. Hill had a season best of 5:35.12 from her freshman year and had run a 5:24.57 earlier in the season at the Bullet Invite. Hill placed second at Morton Distance Gala on Saturday, May 2 finishing behind Audrey Dickinson of Glasford. Her big personal best comes behind years of being in the 5:20s to 5:40s going back to 2022 when competing for Brimfield Grade School. In 2023 she was the IESA 2A State Champion where she ran 5:29.75 as a 7th grader.
Things are starting to warm up in Michigan as Muskegon Heights sophomore Kaevouhn Sims ran 11.19 in the 100m at thw WMC Quad Meet. This moves up to #144 in MI. That's a PR, down from 12.07. Sims is in his second year competing in track & field where he was primarily a high jumper his freshman year with a best mark of 5-10. He ran the 100m Dash just once with a time of 12.52 as well as a 200m time of 24.72. As a sophomore Sims is more focused on the sprints and finding success in the 100m Dash.
Batavia freshman Sophia Lawrence has been an all around athlete with a vast variety of events contested so far in her track career. She's contested the sprints, 400m Hurdles, Pole Vault and middle distance events in her two years on the track. While primarily contesting the 400m Hurdles and Pole Vault, she had a major breakthrough in her first 800m of the season. In 2025 at her home meet, the Batavia Blue Devil Invitational, she ran the 800m in 2:43.28. She did so again last Saturday at the same meet taking the win in 2:24.39! She had dropped her 600m time indoors from 1:48.86 to 1:42.32 where she won the Section 5 Championships, but this massive 19 second personal best may have her rethinking on what event to focus on over the last month of the season.
Chrystian Cokely (West Johnston, NC)
Chrystian Cokely (West Johnston) broke through with a 10.47 100m, jumping into the top 15 at #12 in the state. Cokely is now a top-10 junior in the state. That's a PR, down from 11.23. Cokely placed second at Carolina Conference Championships on Thursday, April 30, taking down state #32 JaQuan Wynne along the way. Cokely blew away his season best in the prelims running the fastest time in of 10.60. He would fall to Roger Patterson (Union Pines) in the finals who ran 10.41, but both would run major PRs and ready to make some noise as postseason in North Carolina is in full swing.
Maliah Norris stepped up over the 100m Hurdles when it mattered the most at the UIL 2A Region III meet last weekend. Norris had won her Area meet in 16.06 for a season best. At Regions, she was the second fastest in the prelims at 16.05. It would take better to advance to the UIL 2A State Championships where top 2 qualify automatically with an additional wild card spot for the fastest third place finisher across all regions. While she fell short of the top 2, she ran a massive PR of 15.00 to take 3rd overall. Her mark was the fourth fastest on the weekend across the UIL 2A Regionals and moves her onto the UIL State Championships next week! Norris would also place 4th in the 300m Hurdles with a new personal best of 47.36 at the Region Championships.
