According to MileSplit's database, only nine eighth-grade boys have ever broken 4:30 in the mile, with three of them running sub-4:25. Surface joined that coveted list over the weekend at the ASICS Sound Invite, where he threw down a 4:20.76 showing, the No. 3 fastest performance ever run by an eighth grader. One of the top distance prospects in the nation, Surface won his race by 13 seconds on Saturday, and led eight middle schoolers under 5:00. For what it's worth, he also owns the No. 1, No. 1, and No. 2 all-time eighth-grade marks in the 1600m, 3200m, and 2-Mile.
