Natalie Dumas Opens Her Season Like a Headliner
If there were any questions about Natalie Dumas' form, she answered them in emphatic fashion at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic in New York. In her first 800-meter race of the season, the Eastern Regional junior stopped the clock at 2:07.73, the second-fastest time in the nation this year and just shy of her indoor PR of 2:07.68 from last March at Nike Nationals.
Dumas' dominance was clear from the start. Her splits - 31.57, 30.66, 32.41, 33.07 - tell the story of a runner in complete control. She led five runners under 2:14 and nine under 2:20, leaving no doubt that her range and endurance remain unmatched. Abigail Robisky of Union Catholic was second in 2:11.37, the fastest freshman in the country this season, with Sophia Thompson, Marella Virmani, and Amaris Pope rounding out a competitive top five.
The junior from New Jersey enters this season with a résumé that borders on legendary. Last spring, she executed two historic triples at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions and New Balance Nationals, winning the 400m hurdles, 400m, and 800m, a feat no other female athlete has ever accomplished at this level. Her 800m PR of 2:00.11 ranks No. 5 all-time in U.S. high school history, while her 400m (51.14) and 400m hurdles (55.99) remain among the fastest ever recorded. Add a 2:03.90 anchor on a runner-up SMR squad to earn All-American honors, and Dumas becomes a quadruple All-American at just 16 years old.
With speed ranging from 200m to a 5K, Dumas' versatility makes her one of the most formidable and exciting athletes to watch in the country.
