Luke Surface after running a 8:52.03 at just 14 years old!
North Raleigh Christian Academy 8th grader Luke Surface ran a 8:52.03 3200m on Friday placing 7th at the NCISAA Division I State Championship 3200m. Surface held a 3200m personal best of 9:02.50 from the Carolina Distance Carnival in mid April setting a 10 second personal best tonight.
The race went out fast with the top guys running 4:23 through the 1600m as he held on to the pace coming through in 4:25.66. The front of the field would pull away as Surface would remain in the second group over the final Mile. While it was out fast, the pace would settle in over the middle laps with Surface running 67s and 68s. He came through the bell at 7:49.55 and would just need to hold pace to be well under 9:00. He'd be right behind John Templeton (Forsyth Country Day) who picked up his pace and pulled Surface with him with Templeton closing in 1:01.49 and Surface in 1:02.49 to run a 8:52.03.
The mark is a Middle School National Record in the 3200m and his converted 2 Mile is under the 14 Year Old World Record held by Vincent Recupero (Bishop Blanchet, WA, 2022). His 2 Mile conversion would be at 8:55.12.
Surface ran 4:23.82 for 1600m and 9:16.41 for 3200m in 7th grade. This indoor season he ran 9:07.43 at New Balance Indoor Nationals and just keeps getting better and better every time you think he can't get much faster.
Surface will race next week at Running Lane then head to Seattle for the Brooks PR Junior Mile where he'll look to take the individual win and break his Mile personal best of 4:17.35. Both streamed Live on MileSplit!
