Prentice Gudgen Invitational Results

Will we see 18-feet in 2024?

After Saturday's outing at the Prentice Gudgen Invitational at Pittsburg State, University of Kansas signee Bryce Barkdull inched closer to that ambition, clearing 17 feet, 6.5 inches.

The senior from Andover Central (KS) not only bumped six inches up from his opening height of 17-0.75 in December, but he also cleared past his personal best of 17-6.25, which he skied over in May during the Shawnee Mission North Relays.

Barkdull also firmly took over the U.S. No. 1 pedestal from Dyson Wicker, a Texan who passed 17-4.75 in that same opening meet in December.

Only four high school boys in history have cleared 18 feet in the pole vault, with Scottsboro's (AL) Maddox Hamm being the last to accomplish the feat in 2022 at adidas Track Nationals.

Mondo Duplantis (19-1.5), Zachery Bradford (18-0.5) and Sondre Guttormsen (18-0) are the only other former high school athletes who have clinched that bar over the indoor season historically.

Missourian Scores No. 1 mark in weight throw

Madison Fowler, a senior from Cor Jesu Academy, claimed a new national-best mark in the weight throw with her mark of 51 feet, 3 inches.

Bentonville star starts off hot

James American Horse, the Bentonville High School senior who led his Arkansas squad to its first ever Nike Cross Nationals appearance in December, was out hot to begin his indoor season, claiming a U.S. No. 4 mark of 8:44.67 in the 3K.

The performance was a full 21 seconds faster than his best time in 2023 and the third-fastest in Arkansas history for the distance.
