Orono's (ME) Ruth White continued to excel this 2023 season by winning her fifth-straight cross country race. Over the weekend, she returned to the Maine XC Festival Of Champions where she won this title consecutively since 2021.

White did something special on the Troy Howard Cross Country Course on Saturday.

For the first time in her career, the senior broke 17 minutes for 5K, and in the process, broke her own course record by nearly 30 seconds with a 16:57.

White led upperclassmen Teanne Ewings and Cary Drake to sub-18 minutes on the course who finished second and third in 17:15 and 17:56.

White appreciated the challenge from Ewings throughout the 5K race, which ultimately brought out the best in her.

"Teanne pushed me all the way," White told MileSplit. "I knew she was right there. I knew I couldn't let down. I can hear people cheering for her and I could see her when I looked back. That pushed me and she ran a really great race. It was impressive that she went under the course record by so much. It's just fun to run with her."
