The Scoop: Best State Championship Weekend Ever?

Riggs, Morgantown Girls Cruise At West Virginia State Championships

Irene Riggs did it all this past weekend in West Virginia.

Arguably one of the best female distance athletes in the country not only completed the 800m-1,600m-3,200m triple at the WVSSAA Class 3A State Championships, but also helped Morgantown to a 4x800m win at the line.

Riggs, ranked third in the nation in the 3,200m this season, cruised to three individual titles in 2:14.68, 4:50.25 and 10:10.02.

And in the 4x800m with a relay title on the line, Riggs played a crucial role in the win, helping the team to a 9:35.12 finish, winning over University by just over half a second.

But in an unusual occurrence not seen very often at a meet like the state championships, Morgantown girls as a program tied for the 3A team title with Jefferson, with each team scoring 111 points.

Other highlights from West Virginia included the sprint triple from Jefferson's Keyshawn Robinson, sweeping the boys 3A 100m (10.70), 200m (21.52) and 400m (48.26), as well as Hurricane senior Lily Haught's hurdle domination with wins in the 100mH (14.28) and 300mH (43.58).
