Underwood, Stutzman Show Off Versatility At Colorado State Championships
Need any proof of just how versatile Mead senior Tavon Underwood is as a track athlete?
Just look at his stat line from the Colorado 4A State Championships this weekend.
A US No. 1 and Colorado state record 45.36 to win the boys 400m. 20.93 to win the 200m. 1:51.97 en route to an 800m title. And you can't forget the 10.67 runner-up performance in the 100m.
That kind of range is rarely seen, and Underwood showed it off in dominant fashion to make for the greatest highlight from the Colorado championships.
Underwood, a Kansas State signee, particularly caught the nation's attention with his 45.36 400m effort on Saturday to move into that country-leading position for the event. But it's not just the top mark of the spring -- it's also the 14th-best 400m time in U.S. high school history.
The display of versatility wasn't the only big moment from Colorado this weekend, though.
On the girls side of the competition, Pomona senior and NAU signee Emma Stutzman had the 5A state championship track meet she's been hoping for her whole career.
The distance phenom completed the sweep of the 1,600m and 3,200m and took second in the 800m, a campaign which began on Friday at the 3,200m distance with a 10:12.68 run.
She would then grab silver in the 800m just hours later in 2:11.32.
But it was her 1,600m effort that stunned fans as she clocked 4:39.84 to shatter the Colorado state record of 4:44.13 set in 2021 by Riley Stewart.
Stutzman sits at US No. 2 now in the 1,600m, just behind Ventura (CA) sophomore Sadie Engelhardt's 4:36.82 nation-leading time.
She had never won a track state title before this weekend. Now, Stutzman gets to leave her final high school state track meet ever with two under her belt.
On the team front, the Valor Christian girls secured the 5A title with 84 points scored and Cherokee Trail earned the boys 5A team win with 74 points. At the 4A level, the Niwot girls dominated the field and won by over 80 points and the boys of Lutheran sneaked out a win over Northfield by a one-point margin.
