An Epic Showdown In The Boys Mile At The Franklin Central Distance Showcase Invitational

At the Franklin Central Distance Showcase Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana, one of biggest kicks of the weekend took place.

There was an epic showdown in the boys mile between Martinsville's (IN) Martin Barco and Carmel's (IN) Kole Mathison, the reigning Champs Sports national cross country champion.

Mathison, a Colorado signee, took out the first 800m in 2:02. But with one lap to go, Barco began to cut into the lead. He inched closer to the national cross country champion with 200m left.

As the crowd stood on their feet, Barco overtook Mathison with 120m left. The junior produced a meet record of 4:08.94 and Mathison finished second in 4:11.36.

Cameron Todd of Brebeuf Jesuit Prep (IN) was third in 4:14.06.

In the girls race, Sophia Kennedy of Park Tudor put together a nearly perfect race for herself as she produced a new personal best in the mile.

The Stanford signee continued to add success to her senior season as she won the title in a majorly solo effort of 4:49.18. This puts her at U.S. No. 9 in this event so far this spring.
