Analysis: While Saratoga Springs and Niwot are among the best teams in their respective regions and will be looked upon to compete for national titles, we feel like Buchanan will also enter into this discussion.
The defending runner-ups from the Garmin RunningLane XC Championships and CIF Division I champions return six runners from that team, including outright star Sydney Sundgren, a senior who clocked a time of 16:59 a year ago. She'll be flanked by the likes of Grace Huthison, who has broken 17:30 for 5K, and three others who have all run faster than 17:45. Buchanan is the second-fastest team in the country based on returning PRs.
Biggest Question: Just how high will Buchanan fly in 2022?
While the California squad should focus on the meets in front of them, specifically the CIF Division I Championships, we also feel they are legitimate contenders to win a national title. If Sundgren gets some help at the top of races, this team will have the firepower to win big races.
