Analysis: The defending AHSAA Class 6A champions have six of seven girls back from a team that scored 26 points in the state-title race. Meaning? This team will be stacked in 2022. Led by seniors Reagan Riley and Clark Stewart, who went one and two at the state championships, Mountain Brook will be the team everyone is gunning for come November.
But just what may this season hold for the program beyond state? Historically, Alabama squads have struggled to qualify (out of the Southeast) or perform at national meets, but perhaps this year will be different. Based on last year's PRs, Mountain Brook is the 21st-fastest team returning in 2022. Last year, Riley torched at the Garmin RunningLane Cross Country Championships -- on home state soil -- in a time of 17:00.30, which was the second fastest time in state history in cross country -- she was also one place shy of an All-American berth. A runner to watch this fall beyond Riley and Stewart? That may be Lucy Benton, a junior who ran 2:10.90 for 800m this outdoor season and 4:56.62 for 1,600m.
Biggest Question: Proving to their competition that they're more than just Alabama's best team.
This is more of a season-long quest than a question. Can Mountain Brook, which has all the pieces to make this season a great one, capitalize on its talent and produce not just at state but in regional and national races? The opportunity is for the taking.
