The Scoop: Penn Relays Recap And A Big Weekend In Texas

The Penn Relays Girls Recap

- - -

It will be a busy weekend in Philadelphia. We'll try to stay abreast here of the results from Franklin Field.

Here are the girls notes:

  • Mifflin County (PA) senior Sklar Ciccolini tossed the US No. 2 all-time javelin
  • Tully (NY) sophomore Brooke Rauber set a US No. 1 at 3,000 meters, winning a Penn Relays title in 9:34.21. The race's top seven finishers now own 1-7 on the national leaderboard, while Rauber scrubbed 16 seconds off her career best with the win. Rauber's mother-coach Michelle told the Syracuse paper, "With a lap to go she put the hammer down and no one could go with her. It was awesome."
  • Fayetteville-Manlius' girls put down a strong display in the DMR, hitting US No. 2 on the clock with their time of 11:45.28. The team consisted of Phoebe White, Claire Walters, Fiona Mejico and Susan Bansbach. Beavercreek (OH), which featured Abby Hobbs, Juliann Williams, Taylor Ewert and Jodie Pierce, was US No. 4 in a time of 11:49.14. Mount De Sales (MD) was No. 5 and Strath Haven (PA) was No. 7.
  • In the 400 meter hurdles, six girls went under 60 seconds. Jamaican Lashanna Graham of Edwin Allen (JAM) High School ran the fastest overall time in 58.02 seconds, while Britton Wilson was second (58.58), Brooke Jaworski was third (58.62), Vanessa Watson was fourth (58.97), Leah Phillips was fifth (59.05) and Shaquena Foote was sixth (59.09).
  • Hydel (JAM) High School also scored a super-fast time of 3:39.98 -- though interestingly enough, it would be No. 2 in the United States, just behind DeSoto (TX).
  • Panther Creek (NC) junior Morgan Smalls won the high jump with a mark of 5-10.5.
  • In the girls mile, Ripley's (WV) Victoria Starcher held off Northern's (PA) Marlee Starliper, scoring a US No. 1 and No. 9 all-time performance of 4:38.19. She reportedly ran a 64-second last lap to down Starliper. The effort broke Mary Cain's old meet record. Starliper went 4:42.30 and Greencastle's (PA) Taryn Parks was third in 4:46.73.
  • Two girls from Jamaica dominated in the triple, with Edwin Allen teammateas Ackelia Smith (42-8.75) and Lotavia Brown (42-5.25) going 1-2 in the event.
