2/7 National Weekend Rundown

AHSAA State Indoor 1-A-7A Championships (AL)

Eighth-grader Amaris Tyynismaa of Catholic-Montgomery broke the All-Time Alabama State Record for 3,200m with her 10:32.94 clocking to win the 4A-5A title. The mark stands as the second-fastest in the nation this year, only Kate Murphy of Lake Braddock has run faster at 10:30 even. Tyynismaa gained recognition in the fall when she clocked 16:57 to win the 13-14 age group section of Foot Locker South Regional, a time that would have placed her fifth overall in the seeded section. She was not allowed to advance to San Diego, but her two mile prowess dictates that she will likely take part in national events soon.

Tyynismaa also won the 800m in a meet record 2:17.57, though the fastest time of the evening came from Presley Weems (Hoover) US #12 2:15.95. In Class 6A, Mary Grace Strozier won both the 800m (2:17.05) and 3,200m (11:35.53).

US #2 60m sprinter Jayla Kirkland ran the fastest prelim time of 7.54. In Boys sprints, Nathanaiel Huggins (Opelika High) tied US #8 6.87 60m to break the state Meet Record in the event.

Ben Bryant wins Class 6A 3,200m in 9:27.49.
