UW High School Invitational (WA)

The University of Washington High School Indoor Invitational is only in its second year of existence, but is quickly becoming one of the featured indoor track meets for preps in the Northwest corner of the country. Held at the Dempsey Indoor Stadium's oversized 307 meter flat track in Seattle, this year's meet had an impressive number of 108 MileSplit elite national performances.
Sophia Rivera made the trip to Seattle all the way from Missouri to compete in just one event in the shot put and she made the best of it. Rivera, a junior from Brentwood High School (MO), improved upon her nation's best and personal best mark of 49'9.25" from last month with a monster throw over 50 feet for the first time at 50'6.25".
Two of the biggest names on the track were returning California state 800 meter champion Mikaela Smith from Clovis North High School and Foot Locker All-American freshmen Annie Hill out of Glacier High School in Montana. Both Smith and Hill dominated their first races of the day with Smith taking the 400 in 56.46 to hold off Canadian sprinter Lauren D'agnolo (56.99), while Hill separated early from the girls mile field to post a sub 5 minute effort at 4:59.60.
Both Smith and Hill later doubled back in the 800 meter run, but Hill had to run from a slower section and won her race in a time of 2:19 which ranked her 3rd overall after Smith showed toughness to come back on limited rest and win her second event of the day in 2:17. Both Smith and Hill used this weekend as race ruster busters with Smith having run 2:06 last spring for 800 meters and Hill going under 4:50 in the mile as an 8th grader.
The top girls distance time of the meet actually came out of the 3K race with Niki Iyer, a sophomore from Harker High School in California, able to build a 15 second margin of victory in her US #3 winning performance of 10:02.17. Iyer last spring as a freshmen ran 10:51 for 3200 meters and is coming off a cross country season which she finished 5th in her California state division race.
Chinne Okoronkwo, a member for Team USA at the World Youth Olympic Games this past summer in China, had competed twice already this winter at the Dempsey against collegiate competition including one of top marks in nation at 40'4.75" only a week ago at the UW College Invitational. So as expected the junior from Mountlake Terrace High School was the class of the field in the girls triple jump on Saturday as she won posted another solid mark of 39'1.75" at UW.
The girls high jump was extremely competitive with 3 girls all clearing a height of 5'7" in Madison Yerigan (Stanwood WA), Hannah Rolfe (Walnut Grove BC), and Geneva Lenhart (Sheldon OR). Only one could take home first place honors and that would be Yerigan as the only one of the trio to clear 5'7" on her first attempt.
The Canadians dominated the boys distance races with first place finishes from British Columbia runners in the 800, mile, and 3K. Taylor Lyman's winning time in the 800 of 1:52.86 would have ranked him US #3 if in fact he were actually American, while Nathan Tadesse led wire to wire in the boys 3K and held off a late challenge from Kamikian's Andrew Snyder (8:45.64) with a time of 8:43.87. Reid Muller, a senior from Pitt Meadows High School in Canada, had the strongest kick to finish first in the mile under 4:20 in 4:19.55.
Julian Brody, one of the top returning hurdlers from the state of Oregon at Jesuit High School, showed he has got some wheels as well stealing the win in the boys 200 meter dash from a slower section with his 22.35 clocking.
Runner-up overall in the 200 meter dash to Brody was Garrett Rouser from Kingston Senior High School in Washington. Rouser earlier in the meet won the 400 meter dash as the lone athlete to go under 50 seconds with his 49.97 performance. Like Brody, Rouser also specializes in the hurdles come spring time as the returning Washington 2A state champ in the 300 meter hurdles (37.97).
With Brody and Rouser not in the hurdles, Chris Diaz had to push himself in the 60 meter hurdles finals to run a US top 10 time of 8.07. The Shorewood (WA) senior Diaz was third in last year's Washington State Meet 3A finals of the 110 meter hurdles in 14.75 and is looking to chop that time down into the low 14's this outdoor season.
