Isaiah Givens on Desert Dream, July 4 Mile Jul 1, 2020

Isaiah Givens, who just completed his sophomore year at Pasadena High, joined Jeffrey Parenti on the MileSplitCA podcast. Givens is scheduled to take the line on Saturday for the Independence Showdown mile run in Oregon with, among others, Matt Strangio and John Lester. In mid-June, Givens got his first competition since late February, running the mile and 3200 on consecutive days at the Desert Dream meet outside of Phoenix. There, Givens ran a 4:16.52 PR for the mile (4:15.03 conversion to 1600m, also a PR), and a 9:16.03 PR for 3200m. Both marks rank near the top in CA for the 2020 outdoor season as well as near the top nationally for boys in the class of 2022. Segments:-17:36 - Independence Showdown goal-16:52 - Reflecting on Desert Dream performance-15:00 - How he got hooked up to run at the Independence Showdown-14:07 - Training since Arizona in preparation for the July 4 race-13:30 - Critiquing the mile from Arizona looking ahead to July 4-12:25 - Altitude training during COVID-19-10:15 - On YOY drops in the mile (1600m) and 3200m-9:35 - Reflecting on 2019 XC season-7:45 - Takeaways from the State XC Championship experience-6:20 - Preferred pre-meet diet-5:40 - On father as coach and the 2020 Pasadena HS team-3:50 - Isaiah's ideal race at Independence Showdown-1:50 - Transition to XC training-1:25 - Preference between 1600m and 3200m
