Evan Bishop after his All-American finish at Foot Locker Nationals in 2018.
Over the past five years, the Foot Locker Midwest Region has been one of the strongest of all cross country regions. This year looks to be the same.
Leading the region rankings are two of the strongest runners in the nation in Valor Christian (CO) High School's Cole Sprout and Niwot (CO) High School's Cruz Culpepper
. The duo both have run strong performances on the cross country course as well as on the track.
Cole Sprout has run sub-9-minutes multiple times for both 3200m and 2-miles as well as clocked a 4:07.20 for the full mile. But don't let his speed fool you, he's a force to be reckoned with on the cross country course as well with a 5K personal best of 14:32.90 from the Nike Desert Twilight Festival
Culpepper also has the speed and stamina to be one of the top runners in the nation again this year. The rising senior clocked a 1:52.93 in the 800m to win the Colorado State Track and Field Championships
and has run 4:04.82 and 4:06.85 in the full mile. On the cross country course, Culpepper clocked a personal best time of 14:43.60 at the Nike Desert Twilight Festival
, finishing second only to Sprout's first-place win.
The top returning athletes who competed at the Midwest Region race last year should also have big seasons this year. Leading the charge is East Grand Rapids (MI) High School's Evan Bishop
. Bishop clocked a 16:09.70 to place third at last years race. The rising senior went on to place 9th at Foot Locker Nationals. Watch for him to again be one of the nation's top guys in 2019.
