James Partlow entered high school knowing he wanted to go to the Naval Academy, the same school his paternal grandfather graduated from in 1959.

Throughout his time at Governor Thomas Johnson (MD) High School, he did all he could to improve his chances to get into the Academy.

He took his academics seriously, became involved in extracurricular activities and enrolled in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, a Navy-funded program for high school students. 

In January, that all paid off: Partlow was accepted into the Academy, fulfilling his dream.

What he didn't plan for? By then, Partlow had emerged as a top distance recruit, too.

The University of North Carolina and other colleges had been recruiting Partlow over the National Letter of Intent period. At times, it was tempting for Partlow to entertain those offers. B...
