Malcolm Johnson Jr. (VA) running in the 200m finals of the DCIAA Indoor Open Invitational.

We break down some of the top underclassmen athletes in the sprints and hurdles. These are athletes who compete in everything from the 55m dash to the 600m run. The 5 top athletes who are mentioned are athletes who are at the top of not only their respective grade but have run some of the top times in the entire nation.

5 Standout Athletes:

Jaylen Wright (NC) - The Southern Durham High School (NC) sophomore holds the second fastest underclassmen time in the 200m with his 22.62 performance from the Boo Williams Winter Break Invitational. Overall nationally his time ranks US No. 27. He also has run 6.53 seconds in the 55-meter dash which is tied for second amongst underclassmen and is tied for US No. 38.

Malcolm Johnson Jr. (VA) -  Malcolm Johnson Jr. from St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School (VA), ranks top ten for underclassmen in the 55m dash, 200m dash, and 300m dash. In the 55m dash, which is his highest ranking event, he is tied for second with a time of 6.53 seconds. In the 200m he is ranked third for underclassmen and 39th nationally. In the 300m dash, he is ranked eighth for underclassmen and just outside of the top 100 times nationally.

Michael Bourne (VA) - The Cosby High School (VA) sophomore has the top underclassmen time in the nation for the 55m hurdles with a run of 7.44 from the Liberty Christmas High School Invitational. His time not only is one of the top in the underclass but also in the nation for all grades. He sits at number four behind three of the nations top hurdlers, all of whom are seniors. Bourne is not just a strong hurdler though he also holds top 15 underclassmen marks in the 300m and 500m with runs of 36.82 for 300m and 1:08.74 for the 500m.

Alexander Nunley (NC) - Although he is still a freshman, Nunley who runs for Run U Xpress track club has the top underclassmen performance in the nation for the 60mH. His time of 8.19 from the NC United Youth Indoor T&F Classic on December 2nd not only ranks top amongst underclassmen but also 41st nationally.

Matthew Garrett (NC) - Garrett, a sophomore from North Carolina, holds some of the top hurdle and sprint times in the nation for underclassmen. His 55mH time of 8.04 from the NCRunners Holiday Invitational sets him at ninth among underclassmen. He also holds one of the top 60mH times with his 8.83 from the JDL All-Comers Meet. At that same meet, he ran 7.23 in the 60m dash for the 13th fastest time among underclassmen.
