State Record Goes Down: Van Meerten Dominates in Phoenix

Yohanes Van Meerten continues a season that keeps getting more impressive by the week. At the AIA Cross Country State Championships, the junior tore through the 5K course in 14:56.2, breaking the Arizona state course record of 15:03.3 that Billy Orman set back in 2010. Van Meerten didn't just edge past the mark. He obliterated it.

Record Shattered

This race is the latest highlight in a fall that has been nothing short of electric. A few weeks ago he dominated the 77th Annual Mt. SAC XC Invitational with a 14:10 three-mile performance that set both a meet and course record. Earlier wins at the Western Equinox XC Invite (15:12.10) and the Peaks Invitational (15:31.90) hinted that he was building toward something special. His run at State confirmed that he's competing on a completely different level. And the scariest part for everyone else: he's still only a junior.
