Weekend Rewind: Top XC Storylines (Oct. 6 - Oct. 12)

Woodward Park remains one of the most hallowed settings in high school running, and this year's Asics Clovis XC Invitational carried its legacy forward with times that will be talked about for years.

Friday Highlights

In the Carlo Prandini Championship Girls Race, Amaya Bharadwaj of Palo Alto took control when it mattered most, powering home in 17:03.8. She held off Kamilah Salim of West Torrance, who clocked 17:18.4, and Alyssa Gutierrez of St. Francis (Sacramento), who crossed in 17:30.1. St. Francis showed exceptional balance, placing five inside the top 30 to win the team title with 92 points, ahead of Santa Margarita and Archie Williams.

The Steve Ward Championship Boys Race saw Olly O'Connor of Viewpoint surge to the front in the final stretch to win in 14:47.5. Andres Lomeli of Kimball finished just behind in 14:59.6, while West Torrance captured the team crown with 101 points, edging Foothill Tech and Oak Park.

Saturday Performances

Saturday morning brought a surge of brilliance in the Bill Buettner Championship Girls Race. Aelo Curtis of Ventura shattered her personal best by more than a minute, finishing in 16:44.5, one of the fastest performances ever recorded at Woodward Park. Summer Wilson of Irvine (16:57.2) and Braelyn Combe of Santiago (17:07.1) rounded out the top three.

The team of the day belonged to JSerra Catholic, whose combined five-runner time of 79:43 ranked as the fifteenth-fastest in course history. Buchanan finished second with 90 points, and Santiago took third with 132.

Then came the Rob Brenner Championship Boys Race, where Jackson Spencer of Herriman, Utah, produced one of the defining moments of the 2025 season. Charging from the front, Spencer crossed in 14:16.9, breaking German Fernandez's 2007 course record by eight seconds. His performance instantly joined the ranks of the greatest runs in California cross country history.

Jesuit (CA) delivered a statement team win over Herriman, scoring 90 points to Herriman's 112, with a 24-second spread across its top five and an impressive team time of 76:09.
