As he entered his senior year at Carlsbad (CA) High School last summer, Cain Evans sent more than 500 emails to college track coaches across the United States.

Evans had only started running a few months earlier, but he was serious about competing at the next level.

The only problem?

Evans's best time in the 800m was 1:59.05, which was much too slow to attract attention and receive any interest.

That being said, a few coaches from major programs still replied, although Evans remembers getting a form email back from Oregon.

In late May, one day after winning the 800m at the CIF state meet in 1:50.21, Oregon assistant Chris Solinsky texted Evans.

This time, the Ducks were serious, having seen Evans improve to the point that he was one of the best middle-distance runners in the high school ranks.
