San Jose State head track coach Charles Ryan and his staff spend most of their time recruiting high school athletes from California. After all, Ryan figures, there's plenty of talent in the state and programs from smaller conferences often have trouble recruiting out of state.

Still, Ryan sometimes makes exceptions, including last year when San Jose State became the first school to offer a scholarship to Malachi Snow, a hurdler from Cincinnati Northwest (OH) High School.

After Snow received the offer in March 2023 and visited San Jose State, he knew it was the school for him. Now, 14 months later, Snow has surprisingly emerged as one of the best true freshmen in the country.
