On Feb. 24, Kevin Bello joined his Cinco Ranch (TX) High School teammates for the Bubba Fife Relays, an early season meet in his hometown of Katy, a Houston suburb.

Bello didn't put much pressure on himself during the meet considering there were still several weeks until the season's most important races. But that day, Bello's future changed when he ran in the 46-second range for his leg in the 4x400m relay, leading Cinco Ranch to a winning time of 3:18.19, which was a half-second faster than second-place Strake Jesuit High School.

Shortly afterward, a University of Arkansas coach reached out to Bello, who until that point hadn't really considered running in college. Since then, Bello has put up some more impressive times, particularly in the 400m, an event he had competed in just once before this season.
