Coeur d'Alene Takes Down Rocky Mountain In 5A Action

This one had been building for weeks.
It was a rarity with two nationally-ranked Idaho boys teams was a rarity.
Maybe more rare was the fact that each of them would go head-to-head in the Class 5A final?
But on Saturday, the biggest day in Idaho cross country went down, and by the end, the No. 6 nationally ranked boys from Coeur d'Alene earned their stripes, winning the state championship showdown with No. 16 Rocky Mountain by 15 points. They were third last year.
Rocky Mountain had two runners inside the first nine places, but Coeur ripped off all five of its runners over the first 16 places, finishing with 45 points.
Rocky Mountain made them work, putting four inside the top 15, but its fifth followed in 29th, pumping points up the ladder as the squad finished with 60.
Both teams ran nearly identical 5K averages, with Coeur scoring 15:54 while Rocky Mountain followed in 15:57. Boise Senior, the third-place team, was third with 63 points and averaged 15:55.
It was a state championship meet separated by just 18 points between the first three teams.
