Avery Lewis entered high school in the fall of 2020, right in the throes of the coronavirus pandemic.
Most of the meets in her home state of Pennsylvania were canceled.
Still, that didn't deter Lewis from competing.
That year as a freshman at Friends' Central (PA), she entered into meets across the U.S., thanks to the encouragement of Olympian Bershawn Jackson, whose daughter, Shawnti Jackson, is Lewis' longtime friend and another elite track talent. Lewis also competed for Run U Express Track Club, the team Bershawn founded.
