No. 23: Ventura (CA)

- - -

Analysis: Few teams in California return the kind of firepower that Ventura sports.

While Great Oak remains the state's most consistent stalwart -- even though it will have to re-load -- Ventura is rising up from the wings and could become California's best.

The team's top four runners return and five of six are back, including Anthony Fast Horse, who was the fastest runner not named Lex Young, Leo Young or Aaron Sahlman in California's Division 2 last year. Fast Horse was fourth at the state championships, while Ventura finished third overall and was sixth in the overall merge.

All things being equal, Ventura will be a team to watch early on and could make a statement by season's end.

Biggest Question: Will expectations get to Ventura?

It's one thing to be the underdog. Some teams and athletes welcome that description because it can lead to a release of pressure on the line.

But Ventura won't be some state secrete in 2023. This team is good. So how will it respond when the lights shine down on its program?
