Matt Sparks was confused. 

The Notre Dame director of cross country and track and field was in San Diego in early December for the Champs Sports National Championships.

It was a prime recruiting opportunity and a chance to see many of the nation's top high school runners compete against each other.

Afterward, Sparks checked out the results and noticed that Cameron Todd had finished sixth in the loaded field. Sparks was surprised he had never heard of Todd, who ran at Brebeuf Jesuit (IN) High School in Indianapolis, about 135 miles south of Notre Dame's campus.

He was amazed that Todd, who was listed as a senior, hadn't committed to a college yet. 

The only catch? Todd was a junior ... not a senior as Sparks had initially thought.
