Since early November, Andrew Regnier has regularly had Zoom sessions with Doug Herron, the head of the Alaska Running Academy. Regnier, a senior at Waunakee (WI) High School, lives nearly 3,500 miles from Herron.

But the two have a connection.

In the late 1980s, Herron was teammates on the University of Arizona track team with Regnier's mother, Sharon, a heptathlete.

A rapport gained 40 years ago stuck. And today, the younger Regnier credits Herron for providing training advice, race strategy and other tips.

Andrew says his mother has been a big help, too. She shows up to each of her son's workouts, recording videos and offering guidance. That attention to detail and additional work has paid.
