For the most part, top high school cross country boys recruits from the U.S. do not step into college and become All-Americans right away as true freshmen.
Of course, there have been exceptions in recent years such as Northern Arizona's Drew Bosley, who finished 22nd at the 2019 NCAA meet; Northern Arizona's Nico Young, who finished fourth at the 2020 NCAA meet; and North Carolina's Parker Wolfe, who finished 28th at the 2021 NCAA meet.
This year, only 10 true freshmen even competed in Saturday's NCAA meet and only one finished among the top 120 in the 252-runner field. Over time, though, many of these runners and their classmates will become more accustomed to the longer races and continue to improve.
