Gary Martin's Course Record At Lehigh Gets Tossed Aside At The Paul Short Run
- - -
Well, that didn't last long.
Hatboro Horsham's Brian DiCola erased Gary Martin's one-year-old course record at Lehigh University's Paul Short Run on Saturday, flying through the line in a brilliant performance of 14:43.20 in the elite boys section.
And Martin's 14:49.00 performance a year ago was not insignificant. It eventually led to a district title, a state title and an All-American performance at nationals.
On Saturday, DiCola held off a hard-charging Rory Lieberman, who was second in 14:47.80. Ringgold's Ryan Pajak was the third athlete under 15 minutes on the 5K course, hitting 14:58.40 on the clock.
Now, just how big of a revelation was this from DiCola?
Previous to Saturday's effort, the Philadelphia-area athlete had opened his season with a time of 15:52 at the PIAA Foundation Invitational. A year ago, his best performance came on this same course in 15:26.80.
Sometimes, perhaps, you just have all the right moves.
Manheim Township won the boys race with 186 points.
The girls race, meanwhile, featured another close battle, with three girls separated by just six seconds.
Haverford's Olivia Cieslak won with an overall time of 17:42.70, while Hershey's Brooke Preputnick was second in 17:46.00 and Hatboro-Horshman's Lillian DiCola -- the sister of Brian -- was third in 17:48.40.
Owen J. Roberts won the girls title with 184 points, overcoming Emmaus, who was second with 187.
